Diskussion Die Corona-Pandemie hat die Sozialausgaben im Jahr 2020 kräftig ansteigen lassen. Nach vorläufigen Berechnungen der Statistik Austria stiegen sie auf rund 130 Mrd. Euro (2019: 117 Mrd. Euro). Weil gleichzeitig die Wirtschaftsleistung (minus 5,1 Prozent) markant zurückging, stieg die Sozialquote, also der Anteil der Sozialausgaben am Bruttoinlandsprodukt (BIP), auf 34,4 Prozent, was einen historischen Höchststand bedeutet. „Im Corona-Jahr 2020 flossen erstmals Ausgaben in der Höhe von mehr als einem Drittel der österreichischen Wirtschaftsleistung in Soziales“, so Statistik Austria-Generaldirektor Tobias Thomas. Mit 34,4 Prozent lag die Sozialquote um 5,1 Prozentpunkte über dem Wert des Jahres 2019 (29,3 Prozent). Zum Vergleich: Auf dem Höhepunkt der Wirtschafts- und Finanzkrise 2009 machte sie noch 29,6 Prozent aus, im Durchschnitt des letzten Jahrzehnts (2010-2020) 29,9 Prozent.
