because of the history ukrainian have during world war ii. propping up nazi germany. that s kind of where putin was getting to him trying to appeal to russian citizens. of course, fabrication by the fact that zelenskyy himself is jewish. it s a very jewish area. it has been. and when they were trying to escape after the soviet union collapse, my parents had a very difficult time growing up there. they were called names, my grandmother, even though she was very affluent teaching piano class of classical music school, she was called names constantly and their passports, even though it might have been ukrainian or part of the soviet union of that time, said jewish as a nationality. so when it collapsed, you saw a lot of immigrants, a lot of jewish refugees trying to move to america, other countries in europe and israel took a lot of immigrants in as well. julie, thank you for sharing your personal story. it s personal but it sheds light on the situation we are facing tonight. julie tsir
intelligence services, the fsb. so it s hard to get a good read of what is happening. we did have the case of a few generals who came out and spoke out against a war and called for putin to resign and basically said what we are all saying, that nato poses no threat to russia. what is president putin s aim here? well, i have been thinking about that a lot for a while. why now? he has ruled russia for over 20 years. he has nothing to show for it over the past 20 years. the economy is faltering, conditions inside russia are horrible. and i think he wants to be simply capturing territory because he saw the soviet union collapse as one of the biggest catastrophes and he continuously repeated that over the past 20 years.
relationship has only resulted in a person like putin who made his moment of trama when the berlin wall fell and he stood there and watched the soviet union collapse and stood there in defense of the last out post of the kgb in the west, right? that was a formative part of his experience. we thought we could move him mast that. he out lasted a nearly three to four presidents and now using this moment of what he thought would be weakness coming out of a trump administration to take over ukraine, what barr mentioned about his mind set. this is the mind set of an ageing man trying to grasp in his last moments of mortality at some legacy of power and strength and is turning out to be a cornered cat. the danger of a corner the cat is that he will lash out and strike out being cornered and he has the opportunity to do that with nuclear weapons which is not something that iran or north
territory. what he wants to do obviously is to take back the territories that russia lost when the soviet union collapse. for most of them being ukraine. that s what he s trying to do, and he s having a much harder time doing it that he thought he would. and he told a lot of lies about the way russia has been treated in the world, specifically russian individuals living outside of russia. he said in many western countries, people are subjected to real persecution. just because they come from russia, they refused medical care, expel children from school, deprived their parents of their jobs, ban russian use, ecology or, and literature. to the russian people believe that? unfortunately a majority of the russian people appear to believe what president putin size. particularly those who only have access to state run media. none of this happens to russians abroad, i think it is true since the war broke out you can read about some russians who have been targeted by people in other coun
what do you think about what we know so far? well, i think, look, it s a good thing for them to air their views and concerns. that s the purpose of this meeting. not likely anything definitive will come from the meeting but it s part of a process. putin is walking into this thing where he is coming from, he sees russia as the dominating power in europe. a return to the influence they had with the soviet union states. many of them are already in nato and that leads to his number 1 frustration. not only did the soviet union collapse but they joined the organization that enabled the collapse of the soviet unit. that s why he went into georgia in 2008 to stop the dominos of
