Southwest Airlines unveiled its latest special scheme on a Boeing 737-8 MAX, Imua One, an aircraft dedicated to the company's fifth year of flying to Hawaii.
foxnews.com. the southwest flights impacted today, they are all being checked? reporter: yes. not all of them. but, southwest airlines, telling fox news, that 79 of the boeing 737s remain on the ground, today. that is translating into about 300 cancellation, nationwide. about the same number that they saw yesterday. because, keep in mind with the 79 planes on the ground, that accounts for roughly 15% of the southwest fleet. represented by that older model. the 737 300 series jetliners and passengers do appear to be taking it in stride. listen to what they have to say: i want to be on a safe plane and glad they are checking all the planes and so that is good and, southwest could have handled it a little better. i mean, the people, this is not their fault but they could have talked to us and we could have gotten on other flights. reporter: it is hard to complain when you talk about safety. but, again, we are expecting to learn some more information.
hurt when the flight landed in yuma. the ntsb inspecting other jets in the southwest fleet. one of those jets diverted last night because of a burning smell in the cabin. casey stegal is live. reporter: it s amazing that 118 passengers walked off this 737 parked behind me in yuma. several things are going on in terms of this investigation. the ntsb has a team on the ground at wisconsin headquarters in dallas, texas where they are pouring over this particular plane s maintenance records, and yesterday officials here removing a large portion of the fuselage around that tear to send it off to washington d.c. today for testing and inspection at the materials lab. investigators have also found what they are calling preexisting fatigue and cracks
emergency landing in west virginia. the most famous example, one you may remember, of metal fatigue was in 1988, when a huge section of the aloha airlines fuselage simply tore off. a flight attendant there was sucked out and died as a result. 60 passengers were injured at that time. and then friday s malfunction has southwest taking a closer look at its entire fleet. the airline grounded 80 more planes for inspections. 300 of the carrier s flights were canceled saturday as a result of this, but a lot of passengers found it hard to argue with the decision. well, i mean yeah, i don t want part of my plane to fall off while i m in it, so i can understand that. there s nothing wrong with that. i think it s a good reason for us to be sitting here waiting because we don t want to get on a plane and the same thing happen to us. so you can t complain about that. can t blame them for that. the 13-year-old plane involved is a boeing 737-300, the oldest model in the southwest fleet. the air
