Learning in Retirement: Carmalita Cahill To Speak About Carbondale Warming Center April 17

Carmalita Cahill, Executive Director of Carbondale Warming Center, will speak at the Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement (SILIR) meeting on April 17 at 10:30 am. Ms. Cahill has been with the Warming Center since it opened in December 2019 at its current location of 608 East College Street. The Carbondale Warming Center, an emergency homeless shelter, actively assists members of the community who find themselves in a housing crisis. <br/>Ms. Cahill holds a degree in Public Relations and Marketing and is completing a master’s degree in Organizational Management and Leadership. <br/>The presentation, free and open to the public, will be at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W Chautauqua Street, Carbondale. Cindy Buys To Discuss Ukraine Visit

Cindy Buys, Professor of International Law at SIU School of Law, will share first-hand impressions of the situation in Ukraine on March 6 at 10:30 a.m. Processor Buys has visited Ukraine twice, most recently to attend a conference of international lawyers and scholars. Because there are no commercial flights into Ukraine, she flew into Warsaw and was bussed into Ukraine. She thus has impressions of the situation in Poland to share as well. <br/><br/>Since joining the SIU School of Law faculty in 2001, Cindy Buys has served as a Professor, Director of International Law Programs, and Interim Dean. She is a Fulbright Senior Specialist and has been a Visiting Professor at both Bangor University in Wales and Nicolaus Copernicus University in Poland. She has received both the Outstanding Teacher of the Year and the Outstanding Scholar of the Year as well as other state and national awards for her work and her service.<br/><br/>The session, free and open to the public,

Learning in Retirement: Judge Solverson Will Discuss SAFE-T Act at Learning in Retirement Meeting, February 21

Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement (SILIR) will have Judge Christy Solverson as the presenter at its monthly meeting on Wednesday, February 21, at 10:30 am. <br/>Judge Solverson will explain the Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity–Today (SAFE-T) Act, which became effective in 2023. She will report on its implementation to date in Jackson County. This new act is historic as Illinois is the first state to explicitly prohibit the use of money in pretrial detention decisions. <br/>Judge Christy Solverson is the presiding judge of Jackson County. If the court schedule permits, she will be joined by Judge Ralph Bloodworth, Chief Criminal Judge of the County.<br/>The presentation, free and open to the public, will be at Grace United Methodist Church, 220 N.
