attorney s general will you know evaluate their options in the event it occurs and decide if that s a method to move forward. i can tell you for myself and for the other state ags that signed on the the letter i think we re going to use every tool in our disposal to make certain that the public at large have the opportunity to see the report that they paid for. all right. michigan attorney general dana nestle, thank you for joining us this morning. appreciate your time. i want to turn to carol lam from the southern district of california and former federal prosecutor. good to have you on. some of the criticism with regard to the mueller report, mueller has left a lot of loose ends and it will end up in the state courts. what s going to happen with the legal options regarding trump? well, we don t know what loose ends are out there at this point, and hopefully we ll more soon. if you looked at the possible impediments toward complete public disclosure of this report
of $8.6 billion for a wall, that s a six times the investment based on what the president got this year on a deterrent policy that we know doesn t work and deterrence got us to the man made family separation crisis that the trump administration put into place. we know 2800 kids who were separated officially during the zero tolerance period, but hhs pointed out how there might be thousands more children who were separated before the trump administration started that deterrent policy officially when jeff sessions announced it and now it turns out dana from the southern district of california and the judge down here has said that the trump administration must add those thousands of children to this list of the overall separated numbers. that could bring the numbers up to 3,000, 4,000, 5,000, 6,000 and we don t know because we don t have the accounting from the government as to how many children were separated in advance of the policy.
we will start with what happened last night. that was judge dana sabraw of the southern district of california did not rule the administration needs to reunite the families. was there a stage set for a federal judge ruling on that? there is. also keep in mind that judge sabraw has been a key actor in the story of family separations. especially during the summer ruling this could not happen. stage is set for a hard look of family separations. not separating parents from children, but other separations that have been going on and amnesty international did a fabulous report. documented another 5,000 to 6,000 children separated out from grandparents or siblings or other family members. that doesn t get officiallily cou officially counted as family
breaking news tonight in the ongoing criminal cases, plural, against trump s former campaign manager tonight. just an hour ago the special counsel s office submitted its sentencing recommendation for paul manafort s conviction on firearm crimes in the eastern district of virginia last year. prosecutors are asking the judge for a jail sentence of approximately 19 to 24 years and a fine ranging from $50,000 to $14 million. that could easily amount to a life sentence. the sentence request came as william barr started his first day as trump s attorney general. joining me now, carol lamb, former district attorney for the southern district of california and msnbc legal analyst paul butler. a former federal prosecutor. carol, let me start with you. this is not technically a recommendation. the government saying essentially these are the guidelines and we agree with those guidelines. what do you think about the special counsel s filing of the mueller case today in the
