Planning application on construction of house in Spartylea deferred

A decision on whether planning permission should be granted for the construction of a house in Spartylea has been deferred. Planning permission had been sought for the construction of one dwelling on the site of an original byre at The Barn in Sparty Lea, which is located between Allendale and Allenheads. But councillors decided to defer the application during a meeting of the Tynedale Local Area Council’s planning committee on Tuesday. The building would be constructed of stone and timber clad. It would be L-shaped with an integral open-fronted garage and would be one and a half storeys, with three bedrooms in the roofspace.

TALKING POINT: You can't deny Covid is a deadly disease

The Rt Rev. Graham Usher during his time as the Rector of Hexham, at Hexham Abbey. IT’S one thing to be in denial about something, particularly if it’s a personal issue or a trauma which has caused considerable distress. We all have different coping mechanisms, and in some cases we can grow to accept and even overcome the matter at hand. But to deny a global event which has evidently killed almost two million people worldwide, is beyond comprehension in my opinion. I believe that no right thinking member of society would even think of suggesting that coronavirus, a pandemic which has brought devastation to families in the heart of the Tyne Valley, is not true.

Tributes to Allendale's former Northumberland county councillor

From 1989 to 2009, Bill Purdue represented the South Tynedale ward on Northumberland County Council. The affable man was a familiar face at parish council meetings in the area, and also at the council’s headquarters in Morpeth, where he chaired committees and championed local causes. But away from council matters, Bill was a distinguished professor, historian and author, who penned no fewer than 16 books. Now tributes are being paid to the Allendale man, who has died aged 79. Coun. Colin Horncastle, who succeeded Bill as councillor for South Tynedale said: “As a man, he was a lovely, friendly person, who gave me a lot of support and advice in my early days as a councillor.

Coronavirus in Northumberland round-up - Wednesday, December 30

Northumberland County Council records the number of active cases - per ward - over a seven day period.  And while wards in the Tyne Valley remain the worst affected in Northumberland, there are signs of improvement in the west, but cause for concern further east.  Haltwhistle continues to top the list with 37 active cases over the latest seven-day period. However, this is a considerable reduction on the figure for Christmas Eve, which stood at 55 active cases.  Cases remain high in other parts of the district. Prudhoe South is second on the list with 29 active cases, and Prudhoe North second with 27, alongside Hexham Central with Acomb, and Haydon & Hadrian on 26.
