The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) will host the 43rd National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend on May 4-5 in Emmitsburg, Maryland. This year’s national tribute will honor 89 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2023 and 137 firefighters who died in previous years.

Matthew "Matt" Hanenkrath died Tuesday, June 27 after responding to a fire call. Hankrath was the Chief at South Richland Fire Department and was a responder to a house fire call. Hanenkrath was 40 years old and is survived by his wife, Ashley, and three children Haleigh, Brynn, and Bentley. Matt was heavily involved in his community acting as the President of Ayersville Board of Education and acting as a coach to his daughter's softball team and as assistant coach to Ayersville High School Football team.
