at the end of the day i think the chinese probably see our presence, particularly in japan, as more of a stabilizing than threatening influence. general, let me ask you, the trump administration is arguing that donald trump s rhetoric, the very stuff that you and i have talked together and you criticized is what got them to the table. got the north koreans to the table. the threats. do you believe that? i think the unpredictable, the volatility of president trump, you know like the crazy guy in jail, probably did contribute to a sense of anxiety in the part of north koreans. realistically, kim jong-un knows he s not currently able to fight a nuclear exchange with the united states. his conventional power is highly unlikely to be a significant threat just to the south korean armed forces. never mind combined with the u.s. and regional allies.
he s clearly trying to send a message here. does the u.s. need to be a bit more flexible, at least, in its posture to the prospect of these talks? the reality of u.s., japanese and south korean military power is overwhelming. south korean armed forces alone are 700,000 some odd troops. i n t think that backdr of negotiations is going to goway readily. i would say that, again, i think the north koreans are in a clever way trying to divide the south koreans from a common military national security deterrent effect. it might well work and not to the greater safety of the south koreans, japanese or us. so we re in a difficult position. it s not likely, at all, that the north koreans are going to back off their nuclear and missile program. i think that is really the central concern for u.s. national security planners. always good to hear from you. thank you very much.
