yeah, basically in the morning when it s calmed down a little bit. we can t go out in it. reporter: 2004, 2005, i know this is a community that was rocked by at least tropical storms, ivan doing among the worst. are we expecting it to be that bad this time around? we ve been listening to the weather reports and they re saying yes, we are. reporter: thank you for sharing again. yeah. reporter: be safe out there. thank you, again, for the geographic correction. you guys, we re just outside melbourne. thank you. reporter: thank you, jeff. chris, that s the latest from here. all right, craig, melbourne, florida, please don t stay out there too long. okay, craig, get safe. joining me now, nbc news ron motte who is in daytona beach. ron, you re driving around daytona beach which is also, as i understand it, an area under mandatory evacuation. what are you seeing? reporter: well, we re just we decided to take a quick ride while we can still do this, chris, so we re o
anywhere from 7 to 11 feet. obvious la, the hope is that we re closer to seven and not toward 11. now, what s going to happen here is this water is going to easily breach some of these seawalls along the ocean front, and start chasing up these access roads that lead to the main north/south drag, atlantic avenue. the concern, of course, all the water inlets that lead to the intercoastal waterway. a lot of property up and down the intercoastal waterway. one minute, the water in folks backyard will look normal. two minutes later, it s coming into the house. that s a real concern for folks who are hunkered down there. we do know that this was an area that had a mandatory evacuation, but that word mandatory did not mean the same thing to everyone. a lot of people did go to shelters and left the area. a lot of people stayed. so we wish them well, those who stayed. this is going to be an event that will last well into the late afternoon, maybe into the early evening. so big event, and offici
ron, give us a sense of what s happening there. reporter: hey there, chris. well, we decided to get out here on the road just to see what we could see out here before this becomes impossible to do. this is the main north/south drag along the coast here in daytona beach, atlantic avenue. let me take you outside here. show you what we re seeing. this is a scene that officials want to see all night long, which is very little to no traffic out here. we have seen a couple cars go by us before we got on the air with you, chris. you see some flashing lights up there. there s a police officer sitting there in the middle of the intersection and is stopping cars making sure that people know where they re going and not just wandering around. because that is going to be a problem here in a couple, three hours when this business end of this storm bears down over daytona beach. we are anticipating getting quite a bit of storm surge here. could top ten feet. we ll see. if it does, that may threaten
