At a special session Saturday in San Antonio, delegates of the Rio Texas Conference approved the departure of 33 churches from the United Methodist Church (UMC). The vote comes as thousands of other churches across the country have disaffiliated from the denomination, following years of internal disagreement over LGBTQ participation and ministry.
