County commissioners approved a rezoning request made by a developer to bring in new apartments and an assisted living facility to the Kings Mountain area.
The ceremony kicks off a needed face-lift, said Mayor Scott Neisler.
“It was sort of getting stale,” said Neisler. “Obviously we want to be able to have an incubator downtown for businesses to thrive. It’s important the city supports that. We want to make sure people feel good about being downtown.”
The first phase of tree removal is complete, and the city plans to expand the sidewalk. South Battleground Avenue will be of key emphasis as the city plans to restore the area economically by adding eye-catching signs for businesses and street amenities.
In addition, the city unveiled a jumbo screen in Patriots Park that will be used during concerts and other events. The screen was paid for by the ABC board at approximately $90,000. City Manager Marilyn Sellers said the budget for the streetscape is estimated to be around $1.5 million, but could go up or down because it hasn’t gone out for bids.
