CoastLine: Mama Bears doc explores how a group of Christian women support their LGBTQ kids despite church condemnation

Gay or trans kids are at infinitely higher risk of harm if rejected by the adults around them. In ultra-conservative churches that condemn LGBTQ+ identities, parents often have to decide between their child and their church community. But a group of women that call themselves the Mama Bears is seeking to change that. Filmmaker Daresha Kyi joined us to talk about the power of Mama Bear love.

ETSU presents new symposium Science and Fictions: Cinema in East Tennessee | News

“Science and Fictions: Cinema in East Tennessee,” a virtual symposium presented by East Tennessee State University’s departments of Media and Communication and Literature and Language, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 14-15, via Zoom. This free event is focused on artists, filmmakers, researchers and writers who will share insights on key topics for the region using film as a catalyst for conversation and action. It is composed of three seminars, an asynchronous film screening, a film production skills workshop, and a collaborative film and design workshop. Online panels will engage interdisciplinary panelists around numerous topics, including “Storied Histories: Revisiting Appalachian Myths for the Future,” “Communicating Science: Media, COVID and Public Health” and “What Can Film Do Here?”

Cane Fire addresses family history, tourism

SHARE ON: (Contributed) From Feb. 7-10, the annual South Arts Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers started its spring selection of films; the first of the three documentaries was “Cane Fire,” directed by Anthony Banua-Simon. “Cane Fire” was selected from the hundreds of films that were submitted for review for the Southern Circuit Tour. According to Teresa Hollingsworth, program director for film and traditional arts at South Arts, this one specifically was chosen by members within the community. “What makes the Southern Circuit Tour a little bit different than a film festival is that we have a programming staff that looks at the content of film and the films that are available,” said Hollingsworth. “What makes us really different is that our screening partners are involved in the decision making of selecting films, so for this season and folks from ETSU faculty and staff weighed in on what films they thought would be of most i
