Saftu threatens strike over public sector wage increases

Saftu affiliated unions have vowed to shut down the country after rejecting a 1.5% the government has offered them.
Johannesburg - Public sector unions affiliated to South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) have vowed to shut down the country after rejecting a 1.5% the employer has offered them.
Picketing and speaking outside the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC) offices in Centurion where the conciliation is taking place inside, unions said they are demanding nothing less than a 7% salary increase.
South African Police Union (Sapu) national spokesperson Lesiba Thobakgale said they are at the bargaining council because Sapu has lodged a dispute concerning the current wage negotiations of 2021 at the council.

It s alleged the off-duty cop was gunned down while walking to his car after visiting a friend.
According to the quarterly crime stats delivered last week, 24 police officers were killed by criminals in the first three months this year.
Lesiba Thobakgale speaks for SAPU said: We are very concerned because the killing of a police official clearly means that some members of the community out there would not have a police official. With the recent spike of police killings, it is clear that our police officials are under attack and as SAPU, we are further saying that if anyone kills a police official it should be considered to be treason.
The 31-year-old man, whose name cannot be published for fear of being killed, told the Sunday Tribune that five armed men with rifles shouted his name after breaking the door lock.

CAPE TOWN - The South African Policing Union (SAPU) has reiterated calls for police killings to be declared a national disaster.
This comes as yet another off-duty police officer was shot and killed in Vrygrond, near Muizenberg over the weekend.
Sergeant Malose Lebelo was shot several times and his body was found in the early hours of Sunday morning.
