The Portland Timbers have to have had just about enough of Fredy Montero. The Colombian forward, who returned to the Seattle Sounders this season after departing in 2012, scored the match-winner as a second-half substitute on Sunday in a 2-1 win at Providence Park.
The goal was Monteroâs seventh MLS regular-season goal all time against Portland, including his fifth with Seattle. He also bagged two for fellow Cascadia rival the Vancouver Whitecaps where he spent three of the last four seasons.
âWeâve had Clint Dempsey, weâve had Fredy Montero, now we have Raúl [RuidÃaz],â said Sounders Head Coach Brian Schmetzer. âWeâve got guys who are Portland killers. Fredy coming back and scoring that goal was tremendous.â
The legendary manager, after whom the annual MLS Coach of the Year award is now named, passed away on Dec. 25, 2018. He was 65.
Schmid coached Crew SC from 2006-08, leading the Black and Gold to their only MLS Cup title in his final year in charge. Shortly after lifting the Philip F. Anschutz trophy, he departed to take over the expansion Seattle franchise, and the rest is history.
He led the Sounders from their inauguration into MLS in 2009 until midway through the 2016 season. Under his tenure, Seattle won four U.S. Open Cup titles, a Supporters’ Shield and qualified for the postseason in seven consecutive years.
