He earned a law degree from the one of the university and in 1982, at age 33, he was elected president of the United Mine Workers of america, the youngest person in history to hold that position. He served three terms as president and brought the workers into the aflcio. In 1985, he ran to be secretary of treasure and the youngest person to hold that person, when he held for 15 years.
