Three Gqeberha music legends were honoured at the Mandela Bay Jazz Legacy Festival at the weekend in recognition of the pivotal part they played in maintaining and expanding the history of jazz in SA and the world.
Members of the legendary Jazz Queens from New Brighton boldly described the township in the early 1960s as the hub of Eastern Cape’s talent when it came to acting, music and specifically jazz.
The hub for arts and music, a breeding ground for sporting talent, and the home of heroic figures in SA’s turbulent political history these are just some of the role New Brighton has played over the past 120 years.
The drummer has fond memories of his childhood home in Mdantsane, where his grandmother allowed him the freedom to immerse himself in music. Hence his latest album is dedicated to her.
