Study of city’s purchasing reveals missing data, ‘substantial’ racial disparities Updated Mar 16, 2021; Posted Mar 16, 2021 Facebook Share A study examining years of contracts awarded by Jersey City found that the majority of city vendors had no recorded demographic data, and of those who did, minority-owned businesses were significantly under-represented in the city’s purchasing history. City officials said that Jersey City’s spending with diverse vendors is likely better than the study makes it out to be, and that the city has made large improvements in its spending practices. But the study revealed that demographic data is missing for 69% of Jersey City spending from 2013 to 2018 and the data that is available shows that businesses owned by people of color, women, LGBTQ people, and veterans win disproportionately few city contracts.
