Police are attempting to piece together what happened at a Wellington social housing apartment unit last weekend after a woman was murdered. “The investigation team is continuing to build a timeline of events,” said Detective Sergeant James Stewart. “We believe this man was on foot by himself between 6pm on April 24 and 12.30am on April 25. He has moved between The Terrace and the Glenmore St and Upland Rd area in Kelburn during this time. People are also being encouraged to check any CCTV or dashcam footage that may have captured this man over this time period. Police confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

A tent set up by police protecting the scene was visible on Sunday. On Monday, Wellington City Council spokesman Richard MacLean said council representatives had spoken to the residents in the direct vicinity of the crime scene, with a tenant drop-in office expected to be set up on site from Tuesday. Councillors were expected to receive a written briefing on Monday afternoon. Several police officers, including forensic specialists, were combing over the scene on Sunday afternoon. A long-term neighbour of the victim said there had been “lots of problems” at the flats, and that the fatal incident had come as no surprise to him.

Dressed in a grey tear-resistant gown and sporting bare feet, a 42-year-old man – granted name suppression by Justice of the Peace Allan Sainsbury on Monday morning – made a brief appearance at Hutt Valley District Court, charged with the woman’s murder on Saturday night.
