South Island ploughmen Ian Woolley and Bob Mehrtens are set to represent the nation in Russia after winning their classes at the 66th New Zealand Ploughing Championships in Eastern Southland on the weekend.
Over two days, about 40 competitors ploughed plots on Mark and Sonia Dillon s sheep, beef and cropping farm in Riversdale.
Ian Woolley, of Blenheim, won the Silver Plough and the conventional class and Bob Mehrtens, of Timaru, won the reversible class.
New Zealand Ploughing Association president James Burnby, of Clinton, said both ploughmen would represent New Zealand in Russia next year.
‘’It’s very dry which means the ground isn’t so pliable. ‘’I don’t think I’ve ever seen it so dry at a New Zealand championship – it’s been very hard going,’’ Redmond said. Competitors usually have three hours to plough both a grass and stubble plot, but Redmond said the time was extended by another 20 minutes for the grass plot. ‘’If you hit a rock it can be pretty hard on gear.’’ Redmond, who won the World Ploughing Championships on his home turf in 2010, said a ‘’bit of rain’’ on Saturday morning had dampened the dust for a while.
