Islamabad, Jan 23 (efe-epa).- Nirmal Purja, the leader of the expedition of 10 Nepalis who became the first to complete a winter ascent of K2, the second highest mountain in the world, said Saturday that having reached the summit as a group simultaneously is a powerful message of unity for the world.
“It is a powerful message to the rest of the world. If you are united you can win, (…) divided you fail,” said the former Gurkha soldier, the elite corps of the British Army made up of Nepalese, at a press conference in Islamabad.
Purja explained how on Saturday, 10 meters from the summit, the mountaineers waited for each other to summit “shoulder to shoulder” at the same time, something decided collectively beforehand.

Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja, who was part of the team to successfully complete a winter attempt on the summit of K2 for the first time, was humbled by the warm welcome the team received upon arrival in Skardu and Islamabad.
Taking to Twitter, Purja said the climbers were overjoyed with emotions and our hearts are full of gratitude and thanked Pakistani family for making us feel at home .

Well I’m glad the presidential transition went smoothly yesterday so I can’t focus on the big news in the outdoor/mountaineering world. Last Saturday at around 5:00 pm local time, Nimsdai Purja and a team of nine other Nepali Sherpas became the first group to complete a Winter Ascent of K2. It couldn’t happen to a more deserving group of peoples.the mountains shepherds themselves.
This feat had been attempted for years without any success. K2 is the second-highest mountain in the world at 8611 meters (28251 feet) but it is a more difficult climb than Mount Everest due to its unpredictable weather and dangerous conditions. Thousands of climbers reach the peak of Mount Everest each year but less than 400 people have reached the top of K2 in recorded history.none of them during the winter until last weekend. UIAA congratulates Nepali climbers on first successful winter ascent of K2 Tuesday, 19 January 2021
The International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) has congratulated a team of Nepali climbers who have become the first to mount a successful ascent of K2 in winter.
The UIAA say K2 was the only one of the commonly recognised mountains over 8,000 metres which had not be successful ascended during the winter months.
K2 is the second-highest mountain in the world at 8,611 metres.
The successful expedition was led by Mingma Gyalje Sherpa, a certified International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations guide.
Nirmal Purja Pun Magar, who climbed the fourteen 8,000m peaks in a little over six months in 2019, was also among the climbers.
