Ekushey Book Fair may see fewer books-538141

File Photo The upcoming Amar Ekushey Book Fair is likely to see a smaller number of books as publishers are planning to print fewer copies to avert losses amid the coronavirus pandemic. Publishers fear a fall in the sale of books this time for low presence of visitors due to the closure of educational institutions, hot weather and the possibility of rain during the book fair. The book fair is scheduled to begin on March 18 on the Bangla Academy premises and at nearby Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. President of Academic and Creative Publishers Association of Bangladesh Farid Ahmed thinks the number of newly published books will be reduced this year.

He said they will request the government to consider the option of organising the fair online. The decisions have angered the Gyan O Srijonshil Prokashok Samiti or the Academic and Creative Publishers Association of Bangladesh. Farid Ahmed, president of the association, said the academy cannot unilaterally take the decisions as the fair is a “national matter”. “We know nothing about it (the decision to delay the fair),” he said.
