SOMERVILLE, MA The Somerville Public Schools has named its next high school principal. Matthew Buchanan, principal of Hope High School in Providence, RI, will succeed Sebastian Sibby LaGambina, who is retiring at the end of the school year after a 35-year career with the district, including four years as Somerville High School principal.
Buchanan was chosen from a pool of four finalists. He has more than 20 years of experience in teaching, counseling and program development in a variety of settings in the Providence area, according to a press release from the Somerville Public Schools.

After a comprehensive process, Somerville Public Schools announced that Matthew Buchanan will take over as high school principal.
Current principal and SHS graduate Sibby LaGambina is stepping down after a 35-year career in Somerville schools, including four years as SHS principal.
“I am incredibly excited to welcome Mr. Buchanan to our district as the next Somerville High School Principal. I am fully confident that he will continue to build on the outstanding work of Mr. LaGambina and all the students and staff at Somerville High School,” stated Superintendent Mary Skipper. “His focus on student-centered teaching and learning, his commitment to community and family engagement, and his energy and passion will allow us to continue to move forward on critical work we have undertaken at SHS over the last several years.
