Somersworth Mayor Dana Hilliard gets school district promotion
SOMERSWORTH Somersworth Middle School Principal Dana Hilliard will be promoted to a newly retooled version of the district’s assistant superintendent role on July 1.
The promotion will mark the next chapter of the Hilltop City native’s 22-year career with the district. It also sets the stage for a governmental rarity: a mayor who also holds one of the highest-ranking and highest-paid positions in the city they govern.
“I’ve always said it was going to take a lot to get me away from this building,” said Hilliard, referring to his 10 years at the helm of the middle school. “Now, not only do I get to work with this building, but I’m charged working with all of the buildings and… creating systems that connect with each other educationally, where there is a seamless transition from student to student, from student to building, where everything aligns and aligning all of those systems. SOMERSWORTH Hilltop City schools are tentatively set to begin returning more students and grade levels to in-person learning Feb. 8.
The Somersworth School Board voted 5-4 Thursday night to approve a new tentative COVID-19 school reopening timeline that calls for students in first and fourth grade to start returning on a limited, rotational basis on Feb. 8.
Kindergarten, third and sixth graders, and some Somersworth High School and Career Technical Center classes are already participating in this type of rotational in-person instruction.
The timeline also tentatively calls for additional SHS classes to return on Feb. 15, for students in grades 2, 5, 7 and additional SHS classes to start returning March 1, and for eighth-grade students to start returning March 15.
