Somerset Signs Signal Campaign Controversy Ahead of July Election

SOMERSET It may be a sign that Somerset’s upcoming special election is going pack as much drama as possible between now and July 12. The former selectman who just resigned her seat, which forced the special election, has created campaign signs for one of her most vocal opponents during her time in office, who is now running for that vacated seat. The signs appear to be mocking that candidate, but the former selectman says she wholeheartedly wants the candidate to win. The candidate herself called it “bizarre behavior.” Welcome to the world of Somerset politics. Holly McNamara, who abruptly resigned from the Somerset Board of Selectmen on April 14, has created campaign signs for Kathy Souza, the woman running to fill the vacated seat in the upcoming special election. The campaign signs feature a photo of Souza with the words: “Kathy Souza, Our Savior Selectman.”

Somerset special election to fill selectmen vacancy set for July

SOMERSET Two potential candidates have thrown their hats in the ring to join the Somerset Board of Selectmen after a special election this July. Earlier this month, then-Selectman Holly McNamara abruptly resigned from the board, leaving just two members: chair Lorne Lawless and newly elected member Allen Smith. The special election to fill her seat will be on Monday, July 12, according to the town clerk s office. Nomination papers became available on April 26, and are due back on May 24. Potential candidates must collect signatures from at least 50 registered voters in Somerset to appear on the ballot. As of Monday afternoon, two people had taken out papers, according to Town Clerk Dolores Bence.

University of Somerset begins site work for planned campus in downtown Somerset

Photo contributed SOMERSET — The Board of Directors for the new University of Somerset (US)  announced Monday the commencement of site preparation work in downtown Somerset to make way for the expected location of the main campus of Kentucky’s first private research university. Crews with local contractor Weddle Enterprises have begun demolition of the structures on the property located off South Vine Street, between West Market and South Main streets, as anticipation builds for the future four-year institution. “We are excited to see the transformation of the site and the beginning of what we expect will be the University of Somerset’s main campus,” said Somerset Mayor Alan Keck, who also serves as US Board Chairman. “As we march toward the welcome warmth of spring and seasonal rebirth here in the beautiful Lake Cumberland
