LYONS, Ore. There are still a lot of people who are struggling after losing their home in last year’s wildfires.
But some people have started to rebuild. Dennis and Debbie Willer’s dream home was a gorgeous place next to the river in Lyons. It was where they planned to retire and had moved in July of 2020.
“It was just stunning, huge windows,” said Debbie.
Two days a week back in classrooms is a great start
As schools begin to reintroduce in-person instruction, if only for two days a week, I cannot help but feel relieved.
Over the last year, our community has tried to do what communities ought to do: Band together to protect the most vulnerable in our society. Yet, for school children, we fell dismally short of that goal.
To protect the physical health of our friends, family, and neighbors, we temporarily forgot about the mental and emotional health of our students. We forgot that children and teenagers often have the least amount of control over their home environments. We forgot that children need human connection to achieve holistic health. We left them to deal with tech problems, limited resources, confusion, anxiety, loneliness, depression, and worse. It’s time to go back and do the right thing by our children.

Some Oregon counties may soon face tighter business and social restrictions as COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths continue to rise statewide.
“Recent data are troubling. The virus is again on a march throughout our state,” Dr. Dean Sidelinger, the state epidemiologist, said during a news conference Friday.
The Oregon Health Authority reported a 26% increase in cases for the week ending April 11. New hospitalizations are rising. And COVID-19 deaths are at a five-week high. The figures are “eclipsing even the most pessimistic scenario,” Sidelinger said.
