Force Commander EU NAVFOR Somalia meets with his CMF counterpart to coordinate and de-conflict after approval on new Operation Atalanta mandate January 29, 2021 - 12:02 Force Commander CTF465, Portuguese Commodore Diogo Arroteia, had a video conference call with Combined Maritime Force Commander CTF151, last week, to coordinate counter-piracy efforts in the Area of Operations. EU NAVFOR ATALANTA PROVIDES SUPPORT TO UNODC YEMEN COAST GUARD REGENERATION STRATEGY

On the 1 st and 2 nd of December, EU NAVFOR ATALANTA participated in a panel discussion organized by the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) during which the Yemeni Coast Guard, and the UNODC Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP), launched the Yemen Coast Guard Regeneration Strategy and Implementation Plan. The two days of panel discussions covered illicit trafficking by sea and maritime security in the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden and Red Sea regions. Besides the contributions of EU NAVFOR ATALANTA representatives, other recognised experts from the United Nations Panel of Experts (UNPOE) for Yemen, Risk Intelligence, Conflict Armament Research, as well as former members of the UNPOE for Somalia made contributions to the panel discussions.

Commodore Diogo Arroteia, Force Commander of the 36th rotation shares his first impressions on the operation

“Another day rises for merchant shipping. Over the last decades, merchant ships have been affected by situations that jeopardize their safety all over the world and therefore having a huge impact on the world economy. One of the regions that has been most affected in the last decade is the Horn of Africa, due to the phenomenon of piracy in the Gulf of Aden and in the Somalia Basin, Indian Ocean, where about 80% of crude transported by maritime routes passes every year. This phenomenon forced merchant shipping to adapt, implementing internal protection measures, embarking on private security teams and choosing alternative routes, all of which made the costs associated with commercial activity more expensive, harming all consumers and thus affecting the worldwide economy.

PORTUGAL TAKES OVER COMMAND OF 36th ROTATION OF OPERATION ATALANTA

  On 2nd December, Italian Rear Admiral Riccardo Marchiò, Force Commander of the 35th rotation handed over the command of the Task Force 465 to Portuguese Commodore Diogo Arroteia. EU NAVFOR Somalia Operation ATALANTA welcomed a new Force Headquarters, on-board the Spanish Flagship ESPS Reina Sofia, which will be led by Force Commander Commodore Diogo Arroteia of the 36th operation rotation and by his staff. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic safety measures, a modest but relevant ceremony was held on-board the ITS Alpino keeping strict prevention protocols. Force Commander Cdre. Diogo Arroteia will have command and control of all military forces in the Area of Operations during the 36th rotation and he will be responsible for the planning, orchestration and execution of tactical military activities, and will contribute to Operational Planning taking place in the Operation Headquarters in Rota, Cadiz.
