we are getting horrific details about a massacre at a quarry on the kenya/somalia border. gunmen have killed 36 workers there, but only after separating them by religion. slaughtering only the non-muslims. for more on this, we re joined live in london. what happened? reporter: well, we understand that it was the early hours of tuesday morning and the attackers came into the camp while the mine workers were in their beds. they woke them up and pointed guns at their heads, marched them into and asked them to recite the islamic faith. some survivors told us, some of them were even beheaded. this really has become al
scare the american people into thinking we re going to shut down the government. reporter: so in practical terms, it means there s going to be a bill that is going to be passed before congress leaves, before this lame duck session is over that s going to fund the government for the most part through the next fiscal year, next september. but they re going to carve out the part that deals with homeland security and do a stopgap measure on that to preserve the ability, maybe in the next congress, to try to deal with that with the immigration issue via the power of the purse. but basically they re kicking the can down the road which isn t making conservatives happy. but it s just the reality that republicans know they re facing here with the democratic senate still and more importantly democrat in the white house. dana bash up on the hill, thanks very much. still ahead, a massacre overnight along the kenya/somalia border. why are situatichristians now b targeted? your pocket right
whether or not attacking this mall is particular to the goals of this group? well, the kenya/somalia border has been porous for years, as well as the maritime border. so the kenyans have been trying to figure out how do we contain al shabaab inside somalia and do not allow them to come in. what al shabaab has tried to do is attack targets that inflict tremendous pain on the government of kenya as well as loss of life. this type of mall where expats go, where the upper middle class kenyans go. there s a particular symbol to that. if we re killing kenyans as well as ex-pats in this type of facility, we re sending a message, which is that we re going after the foreign population. tourism is the second largest source of income for the kenyan government, and it s a tremendous attack against the prestige and capability and confidence of the kenyan government. those are the two main objectives that al shabaab is trying to accomplish. is there something for the
