Scopa outraged as Eskom conducts parallel probe into CEO André De Ruyter By Mayibongwe Maqhina Share Cape Town - The Parliament’s standing committee on public accounts (Scopa) on Wednesday expressed outrage that power utility Eskom was now investigating allegations of racism and abuse of power against its CEO André de Ruyter, more than a year after they were made. This happened when the committee met to consider a request by Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan that they halt its inquiry. Eskom chief procurement officer Solly Tshitangano made the allegations against De Ruyter to the committee last month as it was holding hearings into the entity’s 2019-20 annual report.

This according to an affidavit De Ruyter wrote to Parliament s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) as part of an investigation into allegations of racism, abuse of power and irregularities brought by Tshitangano.   Tshitangano accused De Ruyter of playing a part in the irregular appointments of two senior Eskom officials, as well as failing to comply with the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) by failing to submit certain documents to National Treasury regarding the collusive practices between Sasol and embattled Eskom supplier Econ Oil.

The Eskom board announced last week that it had appointed an independent senior counsel to conduct the investigation, advocate Ishmael Semenya. Semenya will interview people, consider evidence and then report back to the board with recommendations. Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan sent a letter to the committee requesting it to suspend its investigation until Eskom’s internal investigation was completed and reported to Parliament.

Scopa will hold in abeyance its inquiry into allegations against CEO André de Ruyter. The committee met during Parliament s constituency period to discuss a request from Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan to suspend its investigation while another investigation is under way at Eskom. Scopa will assess the outcomes of Eskom s probe, before determining if a separate parliamentary inquiry is warranted. Parliament s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) has put on hold its inquiry into allegations lodged against CEO André de Ruyter by suspended chief procurement officer Solly Tshitangano. The committee scheduled a meeting on Wednesday, during Parliament s constituency period, to discuss whether it will proceed with the inquiry. Scopa had been sent a letter from Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan to suspend its investigation to allow Eskom s own investigation to play out. The outcomes of Eskom s investigation will then be reported to Parliament.
