Reece Nahana John Thomas, 36, on his road trip north late last year. He died in Kaikōura on New Year’s Day.
Many mates will gather this weekend to remember Reece “Ruru” Thomas, who died off the coast of Kaikōura on New Year’s Day. Thomas, 36, was a techno DJ known as Ruru, and “a bit of a nomad” who gained many friends through his work in events and music. His tangi (funeral) on Saturday was expected to be well attended. His death came as a shock to friends. Emergency services were called to the beach at the end of Hawthorne Rd about 11am on January 1, following reports a man had gone into the water and not resurfaced. Coastguard helped retrieve his body from the water and the coroner was investigating.
