Ken Salter, above, an outreach worker with the AIDS Society of Kamloops, is looking for help in this year s homeless count that takes place on Oct. 16. While the numbers of homeless people in town are small, the need for assistance is big.
Pushing through tall grasses and spindly willows, Ken Salter reaches the shoreline of the South Thompson River at the eastern end of Thompson Drive.
He s heard rumour that some homeless people have set up camp here. If that s true, they are new arrivals. They are people he wants to meet.
With his trademark long hair, tan hat and backpack containing condoms and needles, Salter walks along the sand, scanning the grassy shoreline for worn paths that lead to someone s ad-hoc home.
