On Thursday’s Backchat, we’re talking about the minimum wage.
Hong Kong s minimum wage will be raised from HK$37.50 to HK$40 an hour starting from 1 May. The government announced the figure early this year, and wrapped up a public consultation on the minimum pay review mechanism on Monday.
But some labour unions say the rise is inadequate, and others say the minimum wage should be reviewed every year, instead of every two years.
Is the new wage in line with inflation trends? Should it be increased? And will employers be able to cope?
What about proposals to review the minimum wage every year?
