I have another the bad-news letters in my newspaper file, but they don t bother me nearly so much as they used to.
If you were raised the way I was, it s quite possible you weren t expected to amount to much. It was made clear as I approached high school graduation that I was not likely to go to college, because (A) I had terrible grades (a 1.75 GPA, which is a high D), and (B) nobody in our family had the money to pay for college.
I should also add here that if my parents were to hear that I was in trouble with a teacher, principal, coach, bus driver or anyone else in any position of authority, their reaction was always, OK, what did you do this time?

My View: Difficult decisions have repeatedly been made, especially during economic downturns, to keep the paper viable and relevant. Many newspapers across the country have not survived.
It has been an honor to work for the Portland Tribune on behalf of its readers for 20 years. As the first reporter hired in late 2000, I felt privileged to help launch the first new general interest newspaper in the city since the Oregon Journal folded 19 years earlier. I sincerely believe the city continues to benefit from its focus on local news, sports and events.

My View: More than anything, the people have made the Tribune what it is. We had a lot of people in January 2001, and a few of us remain.
Outside the walls of the original downtown Portland office and our fledgling staff, cynics questioned why somebody would start a newspaper in the year 2001 and especially in a city that already had an established newspaper, The Oregonian.
A lot of people believed that the Portland Tribune wouldn t make it to 2002.
While readers and media members welcomed the new, colorful, informative and entertaining Portland Tribune, many of them predicted doom; believe me, I heard it all, including from staffers at The Oregonian, although their opinions meant nothing.

When the Portland Tribune launched to much fanfare 20 years ago this week, very few people outside our organization thought we d be around for more than a year or two. Negativity abounded, especially among media competitors and journalism pundits, who gave us little chance for success.
Now, two decades later, we haven t just succeeded in surviving for 20 tumultuous years, we also have grown the Tribune and its sister newspapers collectively into the largest disseminator of local news in Oregon.
