Oh no! Oregon libraries face a conundrum
Attempts at mostly clever rhymes aside, when Dr. Seuss publisher decided to no longer license or sell six particular titles, Oregon s public libraries didn t flinch. They mostly shrugged.
On March 2, Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced that six of the children s books would no longer be published or licensed because they include images and text that portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong.
Washington County libraries mull reopening plans
Some libraries have started to offer limited indoor services, but planning varies between library operators.
As indoor spaces open gradually after Washington County was recently placed in the moderate category of risk regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, libraries throughout Washington County are discussing plans of expanding services before an eventual full reopening at some point.
While the latter isn t expected to happen anytime soon, libraries in the Washington County Cooperative Library Services are all allowing curbside pickup of materials with a handful permitting limited indoor browsing. Welcome back inside the library! We are so pleased to open our doors again after carefully considering safety levels for both our staff and patrons.
You will see some new things in the building – updated public internet stations mean quicker connections and more ease completing tasks, while our refreshed children s room offers families a fun space to pick up the next week s bedtime reading material or homework resources.
You may recall my column last month where I shared our successes with launching new services such as Take Home Activity Kits and Book Bundles. In addition, we have remained active with a variety of local organizations, making sure the library is present at the table for community conversations around education, health, diversity and inclusion, and more.
