Party State secretariat to meet on Friday
Kozhikode: In a bid to get out of its political wilderness, the Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD) has staked a claim in the Cabinet berth in the second Pinarayi Vijayan Ministry.
The development comes in the wake of the decision of the CPI (M) State secretariat not to offer ministership to its junior partners with single legislators. The LJD, which contested three sitting seats of the Left Democratic Front (LDF), was able to emerge victorious only in the Koothuparamba constituency in this Assembly election.
LJD State president M.V. Shreyams Kumar and Kozhikode district president Manayath Chandran lost the Kalpetta and Vadakara seats respectively. All three of them had unsuccessfully contested from the same segments as Janata Dal (United) candidates in the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) platform. Interestingly, the Janata Dal (Secular) had won the Vadakara segment in the 2016 Assembly poll.

Elathur is underdeveloped when compared to Kozhikode North
Geographically, Elathur Assembly segment is a kind of microcosm of Kerala, with a coastal belt of the Arabian sea in the west, Korapuzha river in the north, and serene backwaters, sandy lowlands, lateritic midland, and hilly portions on its eastern side.
Demographically, this suburban rural continuum, carved out of Koduvally, Kunnamangalam and Balussery constituencies after delimitation of Assembly segments a decade ago, has 75% of Hindu population almost equally divided between Thiyya and Nair communities and over 20% belonging to the Muslim community.
