Virginia could be doing more to prevent human trafficking and help survivors, according to the latest report from a state commission tasked with studying the issue. The Commission on Human Trafficking Prevention and Survivor Support found enforcement hasn t been consistent in the state, and said a regional approach would better coordinate law-enforcement efforts. The commission s report also said it s important to seek accountability - not only from traffickers, but those who benefit from criminal conduct and the people who create a demand for this vulnerable workforce. .
Worsening environmental conditions because of extreme weather and climate change are cited as why proactive legislation is needed by the New Mexico Legislature this session. Rep. Liz Thomson, D-Albuquerque, is co-sponsoring the Public Health and Climate Resiliency Act, noting the state is prone to drought, extreme heat, wildfires and subsequent flooding, all of which can affect people s health. .
The public has until February 13th to weigh in on new rules proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency to reduce methane pollution at oil and gas facilities. Emma Galofre Garcia, a doctoral student at C.U. Boulder s environmental studies program, said the EPA has an opportunity to build on successful efforts led by states including Colorado to rein in methane emissions, a dangerous air pollutant. .
Teachers and parents said student behavior is out of control at many schools, and consequences are minimal. Some teachers said they’ve been discouraged from making behavior or discipline complaints because suspension rates can affect accreditation.
