Audit Finds EDD Unprepared for Recession
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the state’s unemployment agency has struggled to keep up with claims. Last spring, applications skyrocketed 13 times above pre-pandemic levels. The Employment Development Department or EDD for short has had its work cut out for it. But a new state audit finds that many of the department’s problems can be blamed on its failure to plan for a recession. And that failure has led to widespread payment delays for jobless Californians struggling to make ends meet.
