you only come when there s bad news. you re right. really bad news. temperatures not that bad interior sections. that s where it s all snow along the coast especially around boston. just a little bit too warm. you see the storm getting its act together. it has really strengthened. the snowfall rates are increasing. we ve been seeing heavy snowfall at times. right now we ve got light snow around the new york city area. but don t expect that to stay that way. we ll see another band moving here shortly. within the last hour we had thunder snow a dynamic strengthening system. winter storm warnings all the way up towards maine. maine you will be done with it by tomorrow afternoon. here s the forecast here as this plays out over time. we re done in new york city. by this evening, boston, you ll transition into some snow. by the time this is done, we re going to be looking at areas over a foot of snow. right along the coast is where there s confidence in our forecast. this is one of those.
in the south. messy today. a white christmas looks great from inside the house. when you have to start traveling very different story. let s go to the maps and talk about what we are expecting. lake effect snow is a problem. showers in the gulf states. frigid temperatures from northern states bleeding into the northeast. from northeast of cleveland up through buffalo and new york state let s show you video right now of what is going on. this is pennsylvania where i started my weather career. take a look at that. you have over four feet of snow in this location. it is just going to continue. how much more snow could you get? look at this. we have seen snowfall rates upwards of two inches an hour. we could wind up with over four feet. we have 56 inches at this point from 7:00 p.m. christmas eve
ready taking a hit there sometime before midnight in that area. it looks pretty treacherous. let s get another look from nbc meteorologist bill karins. bill? well, we did taken a in-depth look at the snowfall amounts. these storms can bring coastal flooding, but this is moving so quickly that it has not built up at the coast. we have high tide that we are minorly concerned about. but the blue is the snow spreading rapidly to the north. it is as advertised outside of the big cities. north and west of philly, north and west of i-95, the new york city area and southern new england, it is snowing as hard as you would expect it to be in a nor easter, two to three inches an hour. we are starting to get the snowfall rates. and it is the interior sections of the new england coast, we have lowered totals from boston to providence, new york and d.c. have come down. not a historic i-95 storm, but a
blizzard. and that means we are looking at blowing snow and problems. we re going to time this out. this evening, the snow will begin after the evening commute in washington, d.c. and into the mountains of virginia. about midnight, it s going to be for our friends in philadelphia. now let s move into tomorrow morning s commute. d.c., heavy snow changing to a rain/snow mix. it s the pink area there. philadelphia, just on the edge of that. we think we re going to see strong winds and heavy snow from philly up into new york. noontime,s it it spreads up to the north, cleveland, buffalo, albany, boston, new york s in the heavy snow. we move into the evening commute of snowfall rates, one to three inches of snow. locally, some areas could pick up four inches of snow. evening commute will be a mess. heavy snow, blowing wind gusts. 40 miles per hour. airports going to be shut down for the most part. light snow is in d.c. wednesday morning, we re looking
