it s getting plastered by the snowfall rate of an inch of hour. an hour south of here, there s nothing on the ground from this storm. we ve got the big spike in the jet stream. we have the vortex, which is going to drop down into the continental united states. that s why a lot of us will see the coldest weather we ve seen in 20 years plus. we re talking highs tomorrow at 13, 14 below zero. that s the coldest afternoon they ve ever had. unfortunately, it s going to be warmered a midnight. technically we won t get the official record. chicago s high tomorrow, 12 below zero. look at the roads down here. snow packed and snow covered. snowfall rate very impressive. the other thing we don t have right now is the wind. that s going to ramp up late this afternoon and tonight. that s going to drag down the cold air. the temperatures will really start to fall after about 7:00 or 8:00 tonight. we re at 31 now. by 10:00, we re down to about 15. by 1:00 in the morning, we re down to 5. then well be
them in the threshold for the definition and sustained winds of 35 miles an hour or more and reduced visibility of a quarter mile or less of snow or blowing snow. that s why they ve got the winter storm warnings in boston all morning and they re keeping ahead of the snow and they ll do this until the last leg falls and out at logan airport they ll severely restrict flights, thomas because they want to keep their crews engaged during the height of the storm and stay ahead of the snowfall rate and they can t do that if there s a lot of planes on the tarmac and the runways and the taxi ways. tonight, 8:00 to 9:00 through at least 7:00 or 8:00 tomorrow morning from boston, providence and coastal connecticut and new york city and long island and that s where they will head in these areas and they haven t had a lot of snow. we ve had several inches and then the snow will end 10 to 15 inches here in boston and then, thomas, the coldest weather in ten years expected in central park on saturd
this. all right. senator ben cardin, always a pleasure. thanks so much. thank you. a brutal blast of icy weather is spreading eastward, and by tonight, philadelphia, boston, and even new york could see icy snow on the ground. officials in virginia preparing for what they call an historic ice event. yikes. the weather channel s mike seidel is in leesburg, virginia. mike, it s really coming down. it looks bad out there. reporter: yes, it s really nice though, alex. good to be with you this afternoon. it s a dry, powdery snow. getting it off the car is no work at all. this is easy because the temperature is at 27 degrees. look at the roadway here. they did treat this earlier. when we got out here at 7:00, there wasn t a flake on the ground. it s just been dumping over the past couple of hours. they treated it, but with this kind of snowfall rate at this temperature, it sticks. it s being packed down by cars. here s the issue. temperatures up in the clouds where this stuff starts a
yesterday in preparation. now, the snow team here, they ve been kind of bored the last couple of years because as you know, we haven t gotten much snow in washington lately and i spoke to the airport operations manager, dana pitts, just a short time ago about what they re doing to stay open. we were getting down to bare pavement and that is our goal to provide a product no worse than wet. but because of that, we need to keep them moving because when you get a snowfall rate of an inch an hour, this is probably close to that. then you ve got to get back where you started in order to keep it open. now, really, the international flights are what are taking precedence here. those are really high volume flights and we ve seen a couple take off and land while we ve been here for the past couple of hours. pretty unbelievable considering the snow we see coming down there. you re one tough cookie. thanks for that report. let s turn now to susan
