As we close out the week, mild air and moisture will flood into the Maritimes, with some heavy rain following the snowiest February on record for places like Halifax
certainly winter warnings as a lot of people are affected by this. we re expecting potentially several more inches in this area so these crews are going to be hard at work throughout the evening into the night and obviously you heard there, a big warning to drivers out there to be careful in these conditions. yeah. while it s gorgeous, it is potentially dangerous and very hazardous. so folks, take heed. thank you so much. all right, even as the winter storm hits the east coast, a warm start to the winter season is leaving the great lakes almost completely ice free. it s the lowest ice cover to start a new year in at least 50 years. the ice cover is usually around 10% by early january. well, this year, it s less than one-half percent according to the nationoaa. it adds to winter woes across the u.s. from dwindling snow packs in the west to the snow drought in the northeast.
that you normally don t think about in these areas right now. and so, it is a shift, too much water in some places, not enough in others, and not enough moisture, not enough snow packs in the winters right now stressing our forests. and, bill, researchers usually say that where there is forest, there is the risk for wildfire. there is an insect that is also making things more difficult, right? that s exactly right. there is a spruce bud worm, kind of defoliating sap-filled soft wood trees, making them into kindling over time. there is also bark beetles and tent caterpillars. this goes back to the winters. if the winter isn t cold enough to kill off these pests, then the trees have to suffer season after season, getting nibbled on in this way and making them all the more vulnerable, just one way things are changing. you see the same thing happening with maple syrup production. maple trees need a certain needed to be freezing and then thawing on the same day and those days are goin
fairly quick. all of these coastal communities you going to be seeing heavy rain. some of the higher we velations you see temperatures elevations, you re talking about really big snowfall, so the snow pack is really adding up here. some of the reds you re talking about another foot of precipitation, somewhere between 8-12 inches of rain, but widespread the oranges and the yellows are talking about getting up to 3-5 inches of rain. so absolutely soggy taking it all the way down to los angeles, and the ground is so wet, nowhere for that water to go at this point, so add that on in some of these areas, and flooding is a major concern. again, just this rain continuing all the way through monday, it just stays incrediblying so incredibly soggy. the the spot we ll be paying attention to is northern california in the coming cays. days. arthel? if. arthel: snow packs, that s good for skiers, but flooding and, you know, these wet, went, went
