a wintry mess is probably the best way to describe it. that i-95 corridor, so heavily traveled from d.c. all the way up to boston. that area is truly the convergence on the rain and snow mix. the further north you travel outside of the new york metro area, it s all snow. as you travel to the metro and the coast, that s the rain/snow mix. several million americans under a winter weather advisory right now. that shading of blue near williamsport, parts of pennsylvania, that s a winter storm watch through the next approaching storm system. that energy and all of the moisture across the rockies and plains. they re going to have a full on winter storm today. as we garner energy, we ll have a storm impacting the east coast. we clear things out and then we re-enter the chance of precipitation late on saturday night into sunday for another full on snowstorm for this area. the potential for six inches plus for new york city, boston and some of the coldest areas
we heard from ron about how this is moving towards our direction here in d.c. we re going to see rain in d.c. up to 2 inches before the storm is over. now, this is a really wide area impacted with winter weather alerts stretching all the way from texas up to the canadian border. it s really incredible. 12 million americans impacted by these winter weather advisories. including blizzard warnings happening right now as the storm continues to ramp up. st. cloud is just to the north of minneapolis. that s where we re getting the rain/snow mix. minneapolis getting rain now. once the colder air comes in, we ll see that change over to snow. the heaviest snow is through parts of kansas, nebraska, south dakota. snowfall rates are coming in at 2 inches per hour. with the winds picking up to 50

but the blue is water. it is liquid rain. think about when you go to the doctor to get a shot and the doctor puts a little bit of alcohol on your arm. it s cold because the alcohol is evaporating. the rain is evaporating on the way down, too, cooling down the sphere. so the forecast does have it turning over to mostly snow, especially interior new jersey. interior new york, vermont, new hampshire, maine, massachusetts, parts of rhode island, too, will pick up more than a foot of snow. this is the rub down here along i-95. the rain/snow mix. it will snow all day here, but it will never get below 34. so it s one of those snowball, snowman-making storms here. when it piles up, it will start melting as it hits. yesterday we were 44 right where i m standing. that is the problem, that s why we don t have ice here and now. that s the good news for the morning commute. the bad news for the evening commute, it will snow so hard, there may even be thunder snow in our forecast.
the wind that we ve seen across this region especially strong right around connecticut, also into rhode island. and western or eastern sections of massachusetts. as the afternoon goes on, we ll start to see that diminish. it s going to be windy all afternoon. but not like those 50 and 60 and close to 70-mile-per-hour wind gusts that we ve seen. wow. the power outages just in the past hour. i told you about a quarter of a million. i thought it was probably more than that. but it jumped up exponentially with about 3/4 of a million people in this northeastern corridor without power. most of those in coastal regions where the wind reports were the strongest. all right. we go to germany. there was a very strong weather system that plowed through here with reports of fatalities associated with the wind and the storm system is now beginning to pull away into western sections of russia. on the back side of this system, that s where we re looking at a little bit of rain/snow mix for
