bay. bell fort all this snow that s been coming down is sitting on top of that water, and the water is not moving at all a. it is slush out there. now, what s fallen on the ground is very dry, and we have exactly what you re seeing in this backyard where it s a dusting of snow at my feet, but this wind creates the blizzard conditions, pushing it into piles as we call snow drift. and this isn t slushy. this is extremely dry. this is more sand-like, and it s been ice that s been pelting all today long. think about the last time you were here at shirley beach when you d pick up that beach towel and shake it off, the sand just goes whipping downwind. imagine that with the velocity of this all day long. if you re in suffolk county, we are still under a blizzard warning for the next hour. we had a confirmed blizzard earlier, and that dumped nearly 2 feet of snow. looking at islip, 22.4 inches. that was registered over two or three hours ago, so the totals
we have had wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour with blizzard conditions lasting all afternoon. and here til midnight we re going to see that. just tremendous. and the snowfall and the snow drifts. earlier today, jon, i ventured out in the four-wheel drive to try and capture some images, and what i saw was remarkable. people that were trying to push their vehicles out of snow drifts as a it came down, whipping winds throughout this fishing village, other residents trying to make their way up and down sidewalks. not too many of them, but those that did trying to brave it and be tough. and then you look at the snow drifts piling up on the sides of buildings as total whiteout conditions occurred. now, speaking of those conditions here, the city here tonight has taken the snowplows off of the roads, jon. it is not safe. there are still blowing winds and snow drifts, and the city does not think that those
