this whole week seems to be a wash for a lot of businesses, september maybe hotel bars. i hadn t thought about that. you have to pay to get the driveway shovelled. snow boots doing real well. when you think of storms that come this big, business comes to a virtual stand still. it affects the economy big-time. jetblue says $30 million off the first quarter profits. you are likely to see more of the same. you think about this trickle-down effect. workers are losing money if they had to call in or call out. they don t have any money to spend. people aren t shopping. you have mcdonald s, whole foods, g.m. ford, walmart. we are also seeing this hiring slowdown. a big problem is you are seeing people not necessarily going out looking for jobs. your not seeing companies hire for jobs during this time as well. one more big problem. you know what today is. today is valentine s day,
welcome back to new york city everyone. i am on columbus circle right at the edge of central park. and what this morning was a very blustery and snowy blizzard-like city, but now the temperature s 34 degrees so it s become a bonified rainstorm, sleet storm, rainstorm, very uncomfortable. and here s a strange statistic that turns out to be true. new york city s experiencing a shortage in snow boots. go figure. apparently all of the merchandisers really didn t predict we were going to have this many storms sequentially, one after the other. my thought is jersey s probably experienced a lot of stress as well when it comes to that state of emergency in this state, state of emergency in new jersey as well. and now we can say ten people have died as a result of this storm in the united states going up and down the eastern seaboard. in north carolina, two deaths can be attributed to this storm. so, listen, it is a dangerous storm no matter where you are.
it can go inside of those snow boots. five to eight inches of snow so far. it s turning into an icy mix. and they believe it s going to get more ice, possibly turn back over to snow a little bit later on this evening and get as much as 11 to 15 inches of snow. the big issue here of course has been transportation, people getting around. according to the mayor, the mayor says that the sanitation department, the people who plow the streets and sand the streets, that they got a really good start at it overnight and then this morning. but then the rush hour came and people were out on the roads and the sanitation department couldn t get to it and that caused some problems for getting around. also, you know, this is a big transportation hub. so the airports are experiencing delays experiencing cancellations. kennedy, newark, la guardia, all experiencing some cancellations and some delays. amtrak as well. a big hub for that northeast corridor going up and down from boston all the way down t
