something tells me it s calmer today after weeks of just crazy snow everywhere. it really has been a wild week. we still have ice and snow on the ground in atlanta. it s melting. the sun is shining. be careful in the south especially in shady areas, sidewalk not completely done with the ice. be careful. take your time to get where you are going. one of the things we are watching is brand new snow. it s not for the south but for the great lakes. areas used to seeing a lot of snow. lake-effect snow warnings in place for syracuse. we ll watch for he have snow bands across this area. now, at times we could see snowfall rates 1 to 2 inches per hour. be careful. it will be tough if you have to travel today and there is snow further out back to the west as well sweeping through chicago. but the big emphasis for extreme weather today is all of the way westward. the pacific northwest. it s been days and days of rain. two mud slides in western washington state on thursday. unfortunately the ri
county, long island, 53 mile per hour winds. that s going to create huge snow drifts. in terms of snowfall amounts, we could see 20 inches in new york city. about a foot in philadelphia or less. then a lot less in washington. just snowing lightly there. in order for a nor easter to really get cranking, it needs cold air and moisture. you can see the lines, the snow bands, how intense it is over new jersey for example, then drive further towards washington an it dwindles down. a lot of the energy kind of hugging the coast and that s where we re going to see the strongest winds and snowfall. i m anticipating the records to go up. we ve had records shattered like in islip. another interesting phenomenon happening the s the mixing we re seeing right over cape cod and the islands. rain changing the sleet, to snow, making for difficult travel.
that is not a fun deal. airports as you have been reporting on. many are closed. hopefully they will make progress in opening those. we are making progress in this storm, getting out to sea. the swirl of moisture that has been rotating snow bands in across new england for the past 18 hours now finally beginning to make a move towards the elbow of the cape. and as it does so, the snow will come from west to east. but the winds will be a little bit more difficult. as far as what you can expect, the snows that have fallen here in new york and philly and up the line in boston is going to stay tonight and tomorrow for sure. daytime highs are not going to get above freezing until later on in the week.
