trains, planes, automobiles, all at the mercy of storms across the continent. fred pleitgen live in germany. we ve seen the pictures. how bad is it, fred? reporter: it s really bad, kyra. so there s a lot of people having a white christmas inside an airport terminal, especially if you re stuck in london right now. heathrow is really bad at this point in time. there are people who have been stuck inside the terminal building, stranded there since saturday. right now about 1/3 of flights out of heathrow are actually leaving. so there are a lot of people, a lot of americans stranded there, as well. that is usually the airport americans use if they want to make the hop to asia. frankfurt is sort of picking up again, however, it was closed for several hours throughout the night because of heavy snowfall. it is a massive snow band that s going across europe, disrupting traffic, both on the ground and in the air, of course, as well. airports in france, belgium, germany, and england, of cour

it s also causing a big headache for travelers. dozens of flights canceled out of dallas today. and the same goes for atlanta. delta is canceling 800 flights today. about 1,000 delta flights were canceled because of weather on wednesday and thursday. pack your patience. it s part of a winter storm hitting the southeast right now. meteorologist jacqui jeras is live in the severe weather center tracking it for us. who is about to get hit next? you know, this is a good chunk of the deep south that s getting hit. we ve been focussing a lot on the i-20 corridor here where we ve been seeing those heftier totals. as you head into alabama and you head into georgia, this is going to be the area i think we ll be focusing on for the heaviest snow band. it s a really tricky forecast because 30 miles could make all of the difference as to whether or not you re metropolitan area is going to be impacted by the worst of the snow of this storm and it really just makes a difference in terms of where t

little safer in the game. it is really iffy. just a few miles will make a difference who gets set up with that heavy snow band and who doesn t. the farther north you are in some of these places the less snow you ll be having. really right here, right along i-20 across mississippi, south of i-20 really across alabama as well as georgia, this is where we think the heaviest accumulations of snow are going to be and that s where you have the better potential of seeing maybe 3 to 6 inches of snowfall and then we ll see lesser amounts up here, maybe that 1 to 4 or 1 to 3-inch range. so the storm system itself sure has a whole lot of moisture with it. you can see all that feeding in here from the gulf of mexico. we re going to see some heavy rain as long the i-10 corridor and a little bit of sleet mixing in here as well, and that s some of these reds that we ve been seeing popping up, especially right along the state line in these areas. speaking near the state line, we have an ireport and it

wilmington, 25, atlantic city, 16, blowing drifting snow. that seems to be the biggest concern right now. the snow is starting to fade. you can see the snow band is going down to the south here, starting to shrink and that is good news. we ll see lighter snow bands move through the rest of the afternoon into the evening. by tonight, this system will finally taper off and then push off to the coast. however,, we still have our blizzard warnings where you see the red. they stay in effect in most areas until 10:00. eastern shore of maryland all the way over to baltimore, d.c. and here is the wind, 37 right now for sustained winds in atlantic city. so blowing snow is a big problem and wind chills will be significant, not only tonight but tomorrow when the snow stops, as well. so our future cast takes this storm and pushes it off to the coast. it tapers off by tonight.
