Fight Over Who Owns Ogopogo Lake Monster Rages in British Columbia

The Loch Ness monster gets all of the lake monster love and attention … unless you live in Canada where it seems that every big lake has a big creature and some local fans. No Canadian water cyrtid has more rabid fans than the Ogopogo of Okanagan Lake in British Columbia, whose supporters are now in a fight over the ownership of their beloved creature’s legacy. The battle pits First Nation people against the city of Vernon, with a children’s book author and a long-deceased local broadcaster in the middle. Which side is the Ogopogo on? Let’s find out.

Water spirit is no monster – he s sacred and ours, Indigenous Canadians say

Last modified on Tue 6 Apr 2021 07.04 EDT People living on the shores of Okanagan Lake have long said that dark, curling waves signal the presence of Ogopogo, a monstrous serpent lurking beneath the surface. A handful claim to have seen the long green body and horse-like head of Canada’s own Loch Ness monster. They tell stories of a creature that once nearly killed a settler when it dragged his horse into the depths. And every few years, new video footage renews excitement that Ogopogo has been found. Indigenous residents tell a very different story: one of a scared water spirit whose identity has been warped by outsiders.
