SMITHVILLE FLATS, NY (WBNG) In a farming accident in March, Travis Flanagan lost both of his legs and nearly his life.
A regulatory boundary prevented an emergency helicopter from New York to provide him with a blood transfusion. Luckily, a helicopter from Pennsylvania was able to take Flanagan to the hospital as he was fighting for his life, while also providing him with needed blood.
Senator Fred Akshar (R) shed light on the situation in New York. We are the only state in the nation that doesn t allow air ambulances to transport or transfuse blood products, he said.
A bill that he has co-sponsored a bill that would change that. Clearly we need change. Clearly, we need to get up with the times, Akshar said.
