In the case of Brig.-Gen. Kevin Whale, that hamlet is Duthil, a tiny farm community near the Sydenham River in Lambton County’s St. Clair Township.

Whale grew up on a 100-acre farm at the corner of Duthil Road and Smith Line that has been in the family for generations, swimming and skating in the river, staring at the stars between evening chores, and absorbing the values and skills that still guide him through 35 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force, including his latest post as Canada’s first general officer assigned to the U.S. Air Force Space Command.
