Town take on Reading in this evening’s live Sky game at the start of a tough run of September fixtures looking to avenge last season’s 5-1 defeat at the Madejski Stadium (Sky Sports One/Sky Sports Mix from 7.30pm, kick-off 8pm).
Boss Mick McCarthy admits that finishing in the top six is looking “increasingly difficult” but says while it is still within reach the Blues will continue to fight for every point. Eighth-placed Town, who are seven points plus goal difference off the play-off places, have six games remaining, starting with Saturday’s home match against Brentford.
Town go into Saturday’s game away against Sheffield Wednesday knowing that only a win will be good enough to reignite their play-off hopes. The eighth-placed Blues are eight points behind the Owls in sixth with a significantly inferior goal difference and with only five games remaining.
Town have confirmed that striker Daryl Murphy is a doubt ahead of Saturday’s game at Wolves having suffered a tear to his calf while playing for the Republic of Ireland in their 1-0 friendly victory over Switzerland on Friday.
