SmitCo Eateries owner Mark Rodriguez, who will own this Popeyes location, worked with Excel Engineering out of Fond du Lac to adjust plans after the commission raised concerns at an April 6 meeting about location and aesthetics.
Following a workshop, the team developed a new site plan that split the parcel, moving Popeyes off of the proposed corner location to an interior spot on the lot.
The new plan removes a front entrance point and puts two entrances to the lot on the back of the property, off Oshkosh Avenue. It also includes an outdoor patio area between the front of the building and drive-thru as well as landscaping that will shield the drive-thru lane from traffic on Oshkosh Avenue.
Commission member John Kiefer said he wants the chain to come to the city but thought it might fit better farther to the west, instead suggesting a pub or bar and grill near Lakeshore.
Philip Marshall, an alternate member of the commission, echoed Kiefer s sentiment, saying a dine-in restaurant might work better at that location but that he also wants the chain to come to Oshkosh.
Both city staff and commission members also have concerns related to the drive-thru, which they said could bring a lot of traffic to the area.
Commission Vice Chairman John Hinz also expressed concerns over the location but called the workshop a starting point and said he s willing to work with SmitCo throughout the process.
