Saskatoon city council opted not to endorse a proposed freeway around Saskatoon that would pass through two sensitive natural wetlands at its regular business meeting Wednesday.

While the rest of us have been coping with the blur of pandemic life, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure has been pressing steadily ahead with plans for a high-speed, four-lane highway that will cut right through Saskatoon neighbourhoods.
This is not the way it was supposed to happen.

When this project was first envisaged back in the 1990s, it was called the Saskatoon Perimeter Highway, and it was intended to direct commercial truck traffic around, rather than through, residential areas. In the intervening years, however, the city has expanded, especially in the northeast, with the build-out of Evergreen and Aspen Ridge.
